Door locks are used on most doors. There are various types of locks such as button locks, key locks, and keypad locks. We often think that they will always work and not need repairs, but this is not always true. Screws come loose, handles break, and hardware wears down. This can make it difficult to close the door, make it unable to lock, and be a general nuisance. 

• Door Won’t Latch: This is usually caused because the door latch and the strike plate are out of alignment. You can typically fix this by tightening the door hinges or adjusting the strike plate.

• The Knob is Loose: Often, all you must do is tighten the setscrew. You can do this most times with a simple screwdriver found in your average toolkit.

• The Entire Lock Cylinder Moves: The lock cylinder will move because the setscrews are loose or broken. Simply tighten the setscrews just as you would if the doorknob was loose.

• Deadbolt is Stuck: Stuck deadbolts happen because the deadbolt is having trouble engaging with the strike plate. Check to make sure that the strike plate and deadbolt are properly aligned. You may file the edges of the strike plate or round out the edges of the deadbolt. If this does not work you may have to remove the strike plate, fill in the screw holes with glue and wood matchsticks, and reposition the plate properly.
